There was a rather interesting statement in Jeremiah 49:13 – right in the middle of the curses on the nations. ““I swear by myself” declares the LORD” It’s like He is saying – “I am so serious that this is going to happen that the best I can do is to swear by Myself about it.” It brings to mind that flippant little phrase that some of we humans use so easily “I swear to god………” Maybe that is a flippant little phrase we would be better off dropping!
Of all the nations that Yahweh cursed in this closing part of Jeremiah, Babylon certainly got the brunt of it. Although Babylon was destroyed according to this curse – her second destruction – at the end of the tribulation – will be even more complete.
I loved all of the three books of John but 1 John 1: 1-4 was incredible. I read that rather late in the evening and gave a great big whoo-hoo! of praise. None of my family was around – they were in bed – but my little bird, Elijah, had a few choice sounds to make about me startling him awake. But I couldn’t help it – it was like a geyser of joy went off in me.
This week we leave Jeremiah and jump into Ezekiel. We also head into Revelation. The end times and this book are always fascinating to humans – it will be a lively time in our small groups!
