e-Bible Reading

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Chapter 13 of 2 Samuel starts the end of the peace in David’s family and his kingdom. Amnon, David’s son, on the advice of David’s nephew, rapes and then discards David’s daughter, Tamar. I wonder if he committed this shameful act because he could count backwards from nine - and knew when Bathsheba’s first son was conceived? If his father could do it - why couldn’t the son? At the end of the chapter, Absalom, David’s son & Tamar’s brother took revenge and murdered Amnon. I wonder if rumors about the timing of Uriah’s death and David’s marriage to his widow had been floating around the palace? If his father could commit murder - why couldn’t the son? In chapter 15, Absalom leads a revolt against his father, his father is running for his life, and Absalom is ruling in Jerusalem. He pitches a tent in the public view and has sex with his father’s concubines to further shame David (fulfilling God’s punishment in Chapter 12). In Chapter 18 Absalom is killed and David’s grief is overwhelming. Chapter 20 in another rebellion, Chapter 21 is famine & war. I wonder how many times David regretted ever ordering Bathsheba to be brought to him?

As we closed out Matthew we once again experienced the trail, death and resurrection of Jesus. I noticed something in Matthew 27 that I had never seen before - the priests didn’t know what to do with the 30 pieces of silver that Judas threw at them over his remorse at selling Jesus to them Here is what The Message has them saying, “It wouldn’t be right yo give this - a payment for murder - as an offering in the Temple”. The NIV says, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” The CEV says, "This money was paid to have a man killed. We can't put it in the temple treasury." The priests didn’t seem to have a problem using this money to pay for betrayal and murder - but they had a problem with it after the deed was done. No wonder Jesus heaped so much scorn on them.
