e-Bible Reading
The humanness of David really is contrasted in last week’s chapters of Samuel. In chapter 6 he wants to bring the ark back to Jerusalem, but he doesn’t follow the law on how it is to be transported. As a result of David’s disobedience, Uzzah touches the Ark and dies - just like God had said would happen to anybody who touched the Ark. Then David - who was in the wrong gets mad at God! He leaves the ark where it stands, then when the household that is protecting the ark is blessed by God (this is the part I had never realized before) David decided that he wants the blessing for himself, and he goes and gets the Ark. But even though his motive was selfish at first, his joy caused him to dance in worship as he traveled with the Ark. Chapter 9 shows us his mercy to the crippled son of Jonathan, who, according to the tradition of the kings back then, should have been killed to keep him from being a threat to the throne. Then the last two chapters of our readings is when David commits adultery, then murders Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, to cover his crime. Chapter 12 tells us the terrible price David paid for his sin. In next weeks reading we will see how David’s sin started the destruction of his family and was the end to the peace in his life. I love reading the Chronicles that parallel Samuel, and give us more details.
Don’t you love reading the parables in Matthew? The religious leaders kept trying to trip Jesus up with their questions - but finally they just quit because they couldn’t. The last verse in Chapter 21 tells of how they wanted to arrest Jesus and put Him in jail (kill Him, really) It made me wonder about this - As Jesus taught in parables, He knew that the religious leaders were becoming angrier and angrier - and that He was sealing His own fate. Do you suppose He ever hesitated before tweaking their noses again - knowing that every time He did it brought Him closer to death?
